Community Overwhelmingly Supports
Kidango's Nutrition Program Once Again


Fremont, CA, (April 22, 2008), Kidango, a local children's charity, announced their annual food and wine tasting benefit event -Taster's Showcase on Sunday, April 20, 2008 raised it's highest gross total ever of $89,324! The proceeds from this event will benefit Kidango's nutrition services that provide over 1.25 million meals to 3,300 children annually in their child development centers in Alameda, Santa Clara, and San Francisco counties.

Over 300 community members attended the event at the Newark/Fremont Hilton Hotel on Sunday April 20, 2008 to enjoy fine food and beverages and to support the work of Kidango.

Seventeen restaurants and food vendors and seven wineries came together to serve up Kidango's tastiest food and wine extravaganza to date. Guests were very pleased with this year's tasty selections.

Returning supporters of Taster's Showcase, who sure pleased the crowd, included: Burrito Loco Taqueria, El Patio Original, Essany Café, Fellini O, Gelato Classico, Papillon, Pizzeria SFO Bar & Grill, Roses: A Chinese Café, Spin A Yarn, Supper Suppers, Sushi Tango, The Pampered Chef and Trader Joe's. New participants this year brought flavorful and exotic selections. These restaurants included: Federicos Café, Kusina, Miraglia Catering, and Relish- W Café.

A panel of food professionals judged the participants food, beverage offerings and table presentations. The judges were:

-Mary Chamberlin - Food and Catering Consultant, Chair of American Institute for Food and Wine for Monterey County, and a member of the James Beard Foundation
-Gay Winterringer - Instructor at Mission College and Food Products Developer
-Nolan Bourgeois - Chef, caterer, food and menu consultant and Certified SERVSAFE Instructor.
-Daniel Arias - Instructor at Mission College and Wilcox High School.
-Deborah Carpenter - Caterer and former food instructor at Ohlone College
-Steve Waterhouse - The Argus/ ANG Newspapers Editor


The following prizes were awarded:
Best Appetizer- Essanay Café (Crab Cake Aioli)
Best Meat Entrée - Papillon (Pork Tenderloin with Merlot Reduction and Corn Relish)
Best Seafood Entrée - Sushi Tango (Pink Tango: Salmon Wrapped Asparagus Roll)
Best Poultry Entrée - Burrito Loco (Pollo Nachos)
Best Vegetarian Entrée- Pizzeria SFO Bar & Grill (Mediterranean Pizza)
Best Specialty Food - Relish- W Café (Italian-Vietnamese Mussels)
Best Pasta - Fellini O (Giant Shell Pasta, Stuffed with Turkey, Porcini)
Best Salad - Spin-a-Yarn (Greek Salad)
Best Soup- Kusina (Buko Pandan, a Coconut & Jelly Dessert Soup)
Best Dessert - Miraglia Catering (Cheesecake Lollipop)
Best Homemade Dish- Federicos Café (Seared Spicy Tuna Odon Noodle & Pepper Salad with Teriyaki Glaze, Four Cheese and Sun Dried Tomato Ravioli, Spinach Pesto Ravioli and a Berry & White Chocolate Dessert)
Best Presentation and Table Decoration - Federicos Café


The wineries and beverage companies competed for awards voted on by the attendees. Those pouring wine and special beverages on Sunday were Chouinard Vineyards, Elliston Vineyards, Essanay Café, Little Valley Winery, Red Skye Winery, Thomas Coyne Winery, Trader Joe's, Ventana Vineyards, and Westover Vineyards Winery.

An array of silent auction packages also brought great fun to the event and contributed to the money raised for Bay Area children.
